Some Facts About The Ludwig Company

Ludwig Company was founded in 1909 by two brothers – Theo and William. This worldwide known company started in a Chicago garage. Brothers’ great invention was a bass drum pedal. It worked much faster and better than other similar devices on those times.

A bit later (in 1916) the brothers upgraded their pedal and it became the ancestor of modern balanced action pedal timpani. And in the 1920th they began to create ukulele – banjos which quickly became famous all over the world and are still valued by modern collectors.

In the 1930th the great depression hit Ludwig Company and it was bought by the Conn Company. However, brother William did not want to accept this fact and he left the company in 1936. He decided to form his own company and began to produce well known speed king pedal. This pedal is still being on the market today. Only in 1955 the brothers bought their company from the Conn Company and it has been known as the Ludwig Drum Company since then.

Their business was not going that well. They struggled for the long ten years until the Beatles noticed their drum kits in London in 1963. Ringo Starr fell in love with the Ludwig drum kit. And after the band performed with their new drum kit with Ludwig log on the stage – the bothers stopped having any problems with selling their drums.

The Ludwig Drum Company became very successful. In 1966 they gifted Ringo Starr a gold plated snare drum. This was a sign of gratitude for promoting their drums and making their business successful.

Another famous drummer to use the Ludwig drums was Led Zeppelin’s drummer. His Vistalite drum set became a symbol of rock drumming. And Vistatile was simply the name given by Ludwig to their acrylic drums of 1970s.

Brother William died in 1973 and the Company went to his son – William Ludwig junior. He was not a good manager and the Ludwig Drum Company became a part of the Selmer Company in 8 years.

From their first steps on the market the Ludwig Company suggested remarkable innovations. They tried and introduced new materials that have never been used before in drum manufacturing. Aside from acrylic drums they also manufactured steel drum kits. But these drums were too expensive and they stopped producing them in the beginning of 1980s.

The Ludwig Company created a highly popular Black Beauty Snare drum. This drum is loved both by drummers and by collectors. It has a black hand – engraved drum shell. This drum appeared on the market several times – in the 1970s and in the 1990s. The earlier versions were made of brass and the later ones were from bronze.
