The way that a large amount of voucher and money off codes websites on the internet keep going is by receiving a commission from your purchases. This is all right and mostly does not cost you any more (though I do know one website that puts their charges up for affiliate sales!). What takes place is that they get you to click on the merchant’s advert, which then goes on to track any sales you make with that merchant.
And that is the crucial failing in voucher sites. Whilst it is fantastic that they are making accessible to you the coupon codes that might save you hard cash, they are more interested in ensuring that you click their advert. This means two things to you, the innocent visitor.
First, some will do everything on the cards to get you to make that click so that they might earn a fee. Commonly this is done by not showing the discount codes to you until you press a link. This link then shows you the code and opens the shop’s website in another window, thus planting the vital cookie on your machine.
Why is this a crisis? Well simply put, every so often these sites will get you to click to expose a voucher codes even when there is not one presented or it has expired. They are hopeful that the fact that you are looking for a particular shop’s code that you are about to make a purchase there. They are then making their commission, even though they have not in reality pushed the purchases. Although the marketing standards say that this type of click to reveal should not take place when no coupon is present, I have still seen it happening and it is not problematical to unearth sites still doing this.
The next issue is bias. These sites are only attracted in showing voucher codes that are supplied from merchants that will pay them a commission. This market is big business and some mix voucher codes with product comparisons. But, they will only compare the costs of those merchants that may send them a payment.
Ultimately, if you are searching to make a purchase and a site can give you a money off code, then does it matter? The result is that you save yourself a little amount, they earn a commission and the merchant makes a lesser amount on the sale.
I deduce the shop will just assume that it is a creditable loss and hope that these websites do send them more commerce in the long term. But if your sale has been initiated owing to another site who is an affiliate, then they themselves will lose out on the cut. And this is a different cause for the click to reveal trick – you have to click to see if there are any better vouchers than the ones you have.
In general, I guess there is no harm with voucher sites in general, it is just the click to reveal technique I dislike.
