Everything Matters
Many people know that if sub-muscular implant placement was necessary for adequate tissue coverage of your implant and your breast tissues are thin, you will have much more tenderness compared to a patient that has implants placed over the muscle. There are new recovery techniques that have been published known as dual plane and 24-hour recovery. With either of them, you can experience the same, or very similar recovery to those who have had their implants placed over the muscles if you receive sub-muscular implants.
When a plastic surgeon uses optimal instruments and techniques, there are no differences in the pain of recovery between patients who have received sub-mammary implants and those who have received sub-muscular implants.
Even if the plastic surgeon that you choose still uses techniques that cause more post-operative discomfort when your implant is under the muscle, this is a short-term problem for long-term protection against seeing the edges of your implants and possibly an even greater risk of capsular contracture. You can expect more tenderness and the possible inconvenience of drain tubes for a few days if your cosmetic surgeon used blunt dissection techniques. If your plastic surgeon expects your recovery to be shot, there will be a short list of post-operative instructions for you. You’ll be much less burdened after surgery if your plastic surgeon is capable of doing more in the operating room.
You will know right away if the plastic surgeon and your beliefs about cosmetic surgery procedures line up in your initial consultation. In this meeting with your surgeon, you will go over many things including how to best prepare for your surgery and what you should and shouldn’t avoid doing before and after the procedure.
The post-operative instruction between cosmetic surgeons vary a lot. Even though there are many variations, the most important thing for you to do is to listen to your plastic surgeon’s post operative instructions. The reason a plastic surgeon knows exactly what needs to be done, better than anyone else, is because he or she is who knows best what happened in the operating room. Never try to out-think your cosmetic surgeon. Following your plastic surgeon’s instructions will yield the best results for your surgery. Do not follow your friend’s advice that has had a similar procedure, from a different plastic surgeon.
If you are like many women that want to receive breast augmentation and know other people who have already had the procedure, especially in the case of sub-pectoral breast augmentation, one of your greatest difficulties will likely be believing that a 24-hour return to normal activities is even remotely possible. You are assured that this rapid return is very possible whether or not your implants are placed over the pectoralis muscle or not.

Mammoplasty surgery will take what a woman has and make it larger. The goal of the surgery is to build a good-looking breast. One that acts, feels, and looks like that of a natural breast. The procedure will increase the size and the projection of a woman’s breast. it will not be able to change the basic shape of the breast. And it will also be unable to address breast sagginess adequately.
A woman who would be the best candidate for a breast augmentation will be a woman who is looking for an improvement but not a perfection. If a woman is physically healthy and realistic in her expectations, then she would likely be a good candidate for a breast augmentation procedure.
Mammoplasty procedures are performed under a general anesthesia in a hospital. They will also likely be performed on an outpatient basis and sometimes will be performed in a surgical suite. Many cosmetic surgeons’ methods of positioning after inserting the implant will be sub-pectoral. Sub-pectoral means that it will be placed under the pectoral muscle in contrast to sub-glandular or “on top” of the muscle. The incision that is created will typically be placed in the fold of the breast and the implant will usually be placed beneath the pectoralis major muslce. Actually, and incision can be used whether it is placed in the nipple, fold, or armpit. The surgery will be performed on an outpatient basis and will take roughly two hours.
Working though the incision that was created, the skin, pectoralis muscle, and breast tissue will be lifted to create a pocket for the breast implant. The implant will then be centered beneath the woman’s nipple. The size of this implant will be determined by several things including your weight, height, reproductive history, rib cage and muscle structure, and skin envelope. This decision will not be an arbitrary decision of your or that of your cosmetic surgeon. During the consultation with your surgeon, you will determine what the best look for you will be. Your cosmetic surgeon will then apply this information at the time of your procedure to determine the best size of implant for you. This will achieve that look as best as possible.
The placement beneath a woman’s muscle will be more painful for the first few days after the procedure, but it will usually be the best procedure to use with saline breast implants. The larger sub-pectoral pocket will allow for a more natural look, feel, and movement to your breasts. You will also be less likely to experience wrinkling. This will be especially true at the upper pole of one’s breast.
Following the cosmetic surgery procedure, a woman is likely to feel tired and sore for a few days, but she will likely be up and around in twenty-four to forty-eight hours. She must restrict heavy duty exercising for roughly two to three weeks after the surgery. It will likely be recommended that no bra or support be worn for about two months because this will allow for the implants to settle into their desired position.
Most of the post-operative discomfort can be controlled through the use of medication. The swelling in a woman’s breasts may take up to five weeks to disappear. The final results from the breast augmentaion surgery will appear between three and six months after the surgery. It is vital that you remember that this is a process and it will take time for the final desired results to appear. A woman’s breasts will likely be sensitive to direct stimulation for two or three weeks, so one should avoid any sexual contact. After that, the breast will be fine as the tenderness will abate. The scars from this procedure will be pink and firm for at least six weeks. Then they may remain the same sixe for several months, or may even appear to widen in size. After several months however, the scars will start to fade, although they will likely never fully disappear.
