When you embark on puppy potty training your whole life seems to revolve around your dog’s need to go to the bathroom. You find that meals are interrupted and you have little time to really kick back and relax. It’s temporary and eventually you can see the results of your efforts. You are on top of the situation because you can see him. It’s much nicer to know he is not toileting or chewing on anything dangerous just because you lost your focus for a moment. A set schedule of trips to the outside potty can be very helpful. Whether you choose to take him out once every hour or you choose to set him on a natural schedule, it’s imperative that he knows the drill.

Don’t forget the power of reward. Fuss about how good he is and always have a treat in your hand when he does the right business outside. This gets the message through loud and clear. Treats are an absolute. They are a direct communication that he has done something good without question, especially if you only give them to him when he has performed well. If he makes a mistake in the house correct him vocally and take him directly out of the house. He doesn’t get his treat or a chance to come back inside with you until he has done his business. This means even if it is raining or snowing or very cold you have to stand out there with him so you can reward him.

The more you stay on top of his movement through the house, time your outings, and reward his good behavior the more you will see improvement. It is important to remember that a few successes in a row doesn’t mean he totally has it. Don’t let your guard down.

Puppy potty training can be complicated by health factors. It can also become more complex if your dog starts to sexually mature. Often nearing the sexual maturity mark can mean a return of accidents in the house.

Different Breeds Means Using Different Training Methods

Dogs come in a wide variety of breeds, so much so that sometimes it is best to not even consider them all of the same species. The only reason that biologists do is that they have the ability to interbreed with other dogs. Dog owners however, have various goals and it is better to highlight the differences in dogs than their similarities.

A Great Danes and a Jack Russell look act and think very differently. A Jack Russell is more hyperactive than a Great Dane. A Golden Retriever and a Collie are very different from one another. It can be hard work to keep them focused; therefore, you need to keep their eyes on you. You can do this by using toys, treats or other items and then wiggling the item to ensure the eyes of the terrier stay on you.

Collies can be equally trainable yet mellower; they are very protective and extremely loyal, which is wonderful. However, it can present challenges as well, since a collie may bark spontaneously and then chase anyone who they see as a threat to the family. This is desirable of a night watchdog guarding the home; however, it does get annoying when it happens each time a child walks along the sidewalk in the evening.

Bark collars are can be useful under these circumstances. However, once darkness falls you should remove the collar. This will help the dog associate discouragement from barking in the day, while it can function as a watchdog during the night.
